Protein fibres or collagen are present around the cornea to hold the cornea in its place. When the collagen becomes weak, it is unable to keep the cornea active. Hence, the cornea starts taking a cone shape, and it starts to lump out. Keratoconus disorder also occurs due to the reduction of antioxidants in the cornea. These are required to protect the collagen fibres from harmful products. Reduced antioxidants in eye weaken these protein fibres and cornea loses its shape

Some of the people also suffer from this disorder because of genetic issues or due to hormonal change.  If you observe similar symptoms, get a regular check-up to avoid any severe problem in the future. The habit of rubbing the eye can also lead to this disease. Rubbing of the eye weakens the collagen fibres.

In the early stage of the disorder, soft contact lenses or eye glasses can help to view things. In such case, the disease is not identified, or people take this issue lightly as a reduction in vision. Gradually, the cornea becomes thin and continuously gets irregular in shape. At this stage, contact lenses of eyeglasses will not help in providing clear vision. In a later stage, doctors go for various treatments to resolve the issue. These treatments for Keratoconus includes

  • Corneal cross-linking
  • Custom soft contact lenses
  • Corneal transplant
  • Intacs
  • Keratoplasty

There are few eye protection ideas to treat such a severe problem of an eye. It provides cornea collagen cross-linking, which is found to be an effective way to reduce the impact of the cornea distortion. This procedure is taken to strengthen the cornea.  The technique used in corneal cross-linking is known as Epithelium-off CXL and Epithelium-on CXL. This complete process can be combined with Intacs to treat the disorder efficiently.

With the increase in technology, another treatment for Keratoconus, called PTK has been invented. It involves the treatment of the cornea by the use of Laser. In this procedure, the bulkiness of the cornea is removed with the help of Laser, and the patient can comfortably wear contact lenses.

Patients, who cannot wear contact lenses and want the permanent solution of the disease, can opt to undergo a corneal transplant. This is the last option in the worse cases. They might still feel the need to use glasses or contact lenses for clarity of vision.

At last, it is always said that prevention is better than cure. So, try to have enough proteins to avoid weakening of collagen fibres. In young age, kids are asked to take adequate amount of proteins to prevent the weakening of collagen.
