Justin Bieber’s Ramsay Hunt Syndrome: A Rare Facial Paralysis Condition

Are you a Justin Bieber fan? Have you been wondering why he has canceled his concerts booked in the coming days? The reason is Justin Bieber’s Ramsay Hunt Syndrome!

This syndrome has paralyzed half of his face, because of which he is physically unable to sing properly. The doctor has advised him to do facial exercises with lots of rest.

What exactly is he facing and what is this little-known condition? Read on to know!

What is Ramsay Hunt Syndrome?

Justin Bieber’s Ramsay Hunt Syndrome is a rare condition that happens to 5 in 100,000 people per year.

The condition is named after Dr. James Ramsay Hunt, who discovered this syndrome, back in the 1900s.

What causes RHS, you ask? It’s a virus called Varicella-zoster virus (VZV). VZV can cause two diseases in humans – chicken pox (Varicella) and shingles (herpes zoster).

Some people confuse VZV as the same virus that causes monkeypox. That’s untrue. The viruses that cause chickenpox and monkeypox both belong to different families.

Justin Bieber’s Ramsay Hunt Syndrome could have happened when the virus led to a shingles outbreak in the body.

Shingles are painful rashes or blisters that form in one part of the body. If this part is around the ears, the shingles can affect the facial nerve in the head and thus lead to RHS.

RHS can also happen if you have had chickenpox in the past. In this case, the virus would have remained dormant for years. It can get reactivated due to stress, covid-19, or a weak immune system, which would make it affect the facial nerve in the head.

In his latest Instagram video, Justin Bieber reveals facial paralysis on one side of his face. He can’t blink his right eye nor move the nostril or the smile on the right side of his mouth.

According to Justin Bieber, getting diagnosed with RHS is his body’s way of suggesting he take some rest and focus on his health.

Currently, he is taking the time his body needs and is focusing on facial exercises to strengthen the facial muscles and get his face back in its good form.

People with Ramsay hunt syndrome may also experience:

  • Weakness on one side of the face
  • Painful red rashes around one ear
  • Hearing loss
  • Dry eyes
  • Dry mouth
  • Vertigo
  • Ear pain
  • Nausea
  • Difficulty closing the eye on the affected side of the face (in this case, the patient needs to tape shut their eye when sleeping)
  • Ringing sensation in the ear
  • Damage to the cornea

Thankfully, the condition is treatable. Most patients recover, while some suffer some kind of permanent damage. These are usually the patients who got the condition diagnosed very late. However, medical science promises better results with every passing day.

Justin Bieber’s Ramsay Hunt Syndrome can be treated with medication:

  • Corticosteroids
  • Antiviral drugs like famciclovir
  • Anti-anxiety medication

Pain relievers can help your painful rashes.

Surgery is not a good option for this condition because it’s tough to reach the affected nerves in the head without causing further damage.

So, it’s best to visit the doctor as soon as you see some of the symptoms!
