Did COVID-19 affect your life in any bad way? For some it increased fear, many lost their loved ones, and a lot of us suffered financial distress.

All in all, COVID-19 brought with it increased stress for each of us to suffer. And stress has its consequences.

Never heard of this term before? Don’t worry, we will discuss all about it in this article. There’s a lot for you to know – from what it is, to some tips on how to get rid of Mascne and also prevent it.

What Is Mascne?

The term Mascne is short for ‘mask acne’.

It is the acne i.e. the pimples, blackheads, or any kind of red bumps you notice on your face after using masks for a long time.

Such acne is common in athletes who wear helmets or headbands.

Now regular acne is not something that happens to everyone. It may be because of puberty, as a reaction to medicines, or simply because you have acne-prone skin.

But these days even those who don’t have acne-prone skin are suffering from Mascne.

A 2020 study on the effects of face masks on our skin, concluded that almost 40% of people who wear masks experience frequent acne.

What Causes Mascne?

1. Unhygienic Masks

Many masks need to be thrown away every 8 hours of use. Some need to be washed after every 4 hours. For doctors, it may even be every 2 hours.

Unfortunately, due to our busy and money-centric lives, we may not have the time or money to wash or throw away our masks every few hours.

Additionally, masks can get dirty simply by sitting on a desk when you are not using them.

That’s why it’s essential that you carry extra masks with you at all times to ensure you don’t wear them unwashed for long. Plus, you should carry a special pouch or box to keep your mask clean for times when you take it off.

2. Stress

The pandemic has increased our stress levels to another extent. The rise in the stress hormone – cortisol, creates a hormonal imbalance that leads to acne.

This acne may probably get healed quickly, if not for the masks that can increase the damage of the breakouts by the friction they create. Thus, making way for Mascne.

3. Prolonged Use of Masks

Acne usually develops due to dirt and bacteria getting clogged in your skin pores.

When you use a mask for long, you create a warm and humid environment for bacteria to harvest and clog the pores.

Also, because the masks keep your germs inside – the ones you expel when exhaling, coughing, or sneezing, the chances of Mascne increase.

How to Prevent Mascne?

  • Keep your skin hydrated: Dry and dehydrated skin breaks down easily due to the direction of the masks. The broken skin cells can block your skin pores, causing acne.
  • Wash your masks properly with hot water: Hot water helps get rid of germs, bacteria, and viruses. Not only does this make your mask a better soldier against corona, but it also makes it a soldier against Mascne.
  • Don’t use makeup or chemical cosmetic products: Any skin care products that may irritate your skin or react with the mask’s material can cause Mascne.
  • Reduce your moisturizer use: The more moisture you have on your skin, the easier it becomes for bacteria to grow and clog your skin pores. So, reduce the use of moisturizer. If you have dry skin, use natural and light moisturizers like aloe vera.
  • Don’t use a mask when exercising, if that’s safe: Sweat from exercise, when mixed with the sebum oil on your skin, can cause clogged pores and thus, Mascne.

All these tips may not work if you already have Mascne. Check out the next section to learn how to stop Mascne.
